Be SMART: Set and Achieve Your Goals!

Effective goal management is one of the keys to achieving everything you want and need. It is a lifelong process that is not limited to a few New Year's resolutions. You will need to train yourself, and it takes effort. While effective goal management is a worthy objective, it will take time and personal commitment to implement an effective plan.

Most of us think we already have goals, but the truth is that most of us don't. Unless we have our goals properly quantified, planned and written down, we don't really have goals at all. We may have dreams or wishes, but we don't have goals.

A little acronym that can be very useful in quantifying your goals is SMART! Here is a brief overview of the process:

S - Make your goals specific, know exactly what you want to achieve.
M - Goals should be measurable. You need to know where you are and how you are progressing.
A - Make them achievable, this doesn't mean easy but with the right amount of challenge.
R - Goals should be realistic. They should not be based on circumstances or good luck.
T - You should establish a timeline for your goals.

Here Are Some Goal Setting Tricks:

1. The simple mechanical act of writing your goals down makes your goals visible and tangible. It's no longer just a thought. Make sure your goal is as specific as possible, and then it becomes a commitment.

2. Ask yourself, why do you want to achieve your goal? I want it doesn't count. There are reasons behind your goals, and if you realize why you want to reach your goal, it will keep you focused and motivated to follow your plan till the end.

3. How do you get started when you already have so much to do? Every day write down a small task for the next day. Make it as small as you can, maybe something that would only take 10-15 minutes. The most difficult thing is to get started. And once you get started you will actually find out that you won't mind doing more than you planned. Set big goals, but make your tasks small.

4. Write down the achievements and tasks you've completed daily. Only write down what you've done and list even small things; make it a daily habit. Writing down your progress motivates you, helps eliminate temptation and simplifies your life.

5. The perfect time to start is NOW! Don't waste your life waiting for the perfect conditions or perfect opportunity. They don't exist. Use what you have, start right now, never ever procrastinate!

6. Are you the person who always puts things off and promises to do it later? Next time you catch yourself putting off an important task, write down the answer to 3 simple questions. Where are you? What do you want to do? How will you feel while doing it? While writing these things down you will already imagine yourself doing it, and it won't be very difficult to get up and do it.

7. Make a game out of it! Challenge yourself! You can turn any boring task into a fun game. Just use a little imagination. See how quickly you can finish a task and keep trying to improve your time. The good thing is you will always be a winner.
